My CS488 Graphics Project

For the fourth assignment we had to make a ray tracer. For the final project I decided to simulate blurring due to lens effects. This first image is a rendering of the lens system I used to perform the blurring effect. It was incredibly slow, so you will not see pictures here that were rendered using it. I made an approximation to speed things up. That worked fairly well.
Here is a normal ray traced image of the chess board I created. The heads of the pieces are polished mirror, and are reflecting the light from the ground (green) and the sky (black). In this image, I noticed my rooks were missing a few surfaces. Maybe you can see that too. I did not get much time to render images; they took a lot longer than I expected. So here are the two best ones.
This one is focused on the queen. You can see the blurred checkerboard up close, and the blurred pawn way in the back. There is a glass cube to the right. It too is blurred. This was rendered at 12 rays per pixel.
Here is another one, at 4 rays per pixel. The focus is on the rook on the left. The queen, on the right, is slightly out of focus. The pawn between the two is also out of focus.
